Dental assisting training of graduate level provides a certificate to this effect. Some institutions offer part training program, though ADA does not give credence to it. Moreover, distance learning program is another good option for dental assisting training. Many colleges and websites are providing dental assisting course through distance learning. There are two types of dental assisting programs. These are formal training and training on job. In formal training dental assisting classes are held. After completing a formal training program sponsored by ADA, a dental assistant is eligible to take the certification program for dental assisting. Those who have completed training on job course are also eligible to take the certification examination. This national certification examination requires two years of training on job experience. This experience should be counted as the work experience in the capacity of a dental assistance. A simple experience working in a health care hospital will not do. The rules of certification or formal training for a dental assistant differ in the different states of USA. In some states to pass a component of the dental assisting certification examination is enough for the certification of a dental assistant. Passing a certification exam is the real evaluation of the formal training of a dental assistant. This exam is exhaustive and takes not less than four hours. The question paper contains 320 questions and 400 marks on the scale of 100- 900 is must for passing the examination. There are several types of question asked in this examination. They are known as infection management test, general test and radiation and safety management test. In addition to dental assisting training offered by schools and colleges, many dental assistants learn the dental care skills while working in clinics, hospitals and other health care institutions. There only do they identify dental instruments and equipments and come to know their usage. They have to use their communication skills and learn how to deal with the patients. Working under a dentist teaches them other office and laboratory works. Thus the training on job helps make them a truly dental assistant. A high school student should choose health biology and chemistry if he wants to do dental assistant training program. Science background is helpful in this training program. But always remember that training on job is the real training for a dental assistant.
